ABOUT THE COURSE
Galileo's Classroom is excited to introduce a course that explores the science of light, from Instructor Dr. Ivo Nikolov for students in grades 8 - 10.
CRYSTALS, LIGHTS, AND LASERS (8th-10th)
Are you curious about what light is, how it is born, and how it dies? How about Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber? How does it work? Do you want to see how snowflakes and other crystals grow, and figure out what makes them “perfect”? Join us to see how extraordinary nature can be, and learn about the fascinating features of crystals!
In this class you will understand what makes a rainbow, what gives the butterfly its fascinating patterns, and what causes mirages and thunderbolts. We will talk about the common symmetries in crystals and how to recognize the special ones. You will get to grow gems, too! Discussions linking light in nature and how it is transformed in the state-of-the-art technologies, along with hands-on experiments, will make this a unique and inspiring course to rising scientists.
ABOUT DR. IVO NIKOLOV:
Dr. Ivo Nikolov has a profound understanding of optics, crystal growth, and lasers, which he uses to translate the beauty of nature into science. He inspires students to discover the secrets of nature as revealed through symmetry and science via investigation and experimentation. Dr Nikolov has advanced degrees in Laser Physics and Material Science, and currently holds the position of Director of Engineering in one of the largest laser companies in the world.
We will meet in the ADP Center, which is in University Hall on the Montclair State University campus.
